Maya nodded, her grin widening. “I think about this amusement park and its beautiful lights," she said, chuckling. "And, of course, you."

She really knew how to flatter people.

We soon arrived at the site where the incident had occurred. Ashton climbed up to inspect the damage, meticulously taking notes as he assessed the situation.

"We've lost two entire sets. Each set includes 22 lights in 13 different colors," Ashton reported, scanning the broken lights before glancing at the crane nearby.

Finally, he turned to Maya. "Get Mr. Mercer over here. We need to assess the damage and liability." Maya nodded and quickly pulled out her phone to make the call. Miles arrived shortly after and paused when he saw me.

He looked surprised to see me there but recovered quickly, flashing a polite smile. "Elaine, are you here for an early inspection?"

I wasn't part of the project anymore, so I knew he was teasing. However, it was clear his tone was lighthearted. I smiled back. "No, I'm just here to see Ashton."

At my words, something flickered briefly in Miles's eyes before he turned his attention to Ashton. "The construction team already informed me about the incident," he said, his tone casual yet pointed.

He didn't say more, clearly implying that Ashton should let it slide.

I glanced at Ashton and noticed his cold, unwavering expression. "If they've admitted it was their fault, then they're responsible for all the damages. I'll coordinate the replacements and send the invoice to you," Ashton stated firmly.

It was clear he wasn't about to let this go.

Miles's usual polite demeanor faltered slightly, and he seemed a bit annoyed. "This happened on my watch, so I'll take the blame," he said.

His words carried an air of authority, an attempt to pressure Ashton into backing down. But Ashton wasn't the type to be intimidated. "Then perhaps I should pass the invoice directly to you, Mr. Mercer," he replied, his tone calm but sharp.

Miles's expression darkened, and I had to suppress the sudden urge to laugh. Ashton wasn't playing by Miles's rules or the usual corporate etiquette, and it was clear Miles wasn't used to being challenged like this.

The tension between them was palpable. Their gazes locked in a silent, heated standoff, both refusing to back down. They were standing so close to each other, it felt like the room itself was holding its breath. Maya, clearly sensing the shift in the atmosphere, nudged me nervously and tugged at my sleeve. But I stayed silent. No matter whose side I took, someone would end up hurt. Besides, I couldn't shake the feeling that this tension had something to do with me. It was better to stay out of it.

"What invoice?" Logan's voice suddenly cut through the tension, interrupting the standoff.

What had been a duel between two men now transformed into a three-way clash. The air grew even 15:13

heavier as all eyes turned to Logan.

The tension escalated even further. Maya leaned in and whispered urgently, "Elaine..."

But before I could respond, Logan called her out. "Ms. Ellison, what do you think?" Get 5 >

Maya flinched at the sound of her name. Her grip on my arm tightened as she trembled slightly. "Mr. Logan..."

"Just tell the truth," I reminded her gently, nudging her forward.

Maya shot me a nervous glance before stepping forward and reporting everything honestly. She detailed the situation clearly, her voice slightly shaky, but she didn't leave out a single detail.

After listening, Logan turned to Ashton. "You don't need to worry about this. I'll handle it with your boss."

But Ashton wasn't about to back down. "I'm in charge here. If I say there will be compensation, then there will be."

Logan's eyes narrowed, and a faint, mocking smile played on his lips. "And what if I say I'm in charge? Are you planning to quit, or are you thinking about leaving this place?"

His words were a direct challenge, designed to trap Ashton. Logan was skilled at manipulation and knew exactly how to corner someone with their own words.

Ashton, with his straightforward and honest nature, wasn't equipped to match Logan's manipulative tactics. And Miles, being just as ruthless as anyone from the Mercer family, wasn't easier for him.

Watching them gang up on Ashton after all the hard work he'd put in-working day and night, especially with the project nearing completion-made my chest tighten. Logan was being unnecessarily cruel. He wasn't just challenging Ashton professionally; he was taking advantage of

him.

I couldn't stand it any longer. I stepped forward.
